Director's Statement
Since opening in 1978, South Mississippi Regional Center has been a leader in the provision of comprehensive services and treatment to hundreds of individuals with intellectual and related developmental disabilities. The Center is licensed by the Mississippi Department of Health as an Intermediate Care Facility for individuals with Mental Retardation (ICF-MR) and is operated by the Department of Mental Health. Our exemplary record of service is due in large part to the wonderful partnerships that exists between clients, staff, families and communities throughout our six-county service area.
Our main focus is to support individuals by enhancing their quality of life and independence in living, learning and working. Every day dedicated members of the SMRC family provide a safe and nurturing environment to the individuals we serve. Our goal is to help each individual reach their highest level of potential and independence. We are there to teach them, hold them when they are sick, laugh with them in good times and to console them in times of sadness. We are indeed one family.
Our workforce is diverse, energetic and committed to providing quality care. On a daily basis the six core values of Commitment, Respect, Responsibility, Communication, Cooperative Effort and Continuous Learning are actively demonstrated by staff. These core values are the driving force of the interactions between staff, clients, families and the community at large.
I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such talented and dedicated staff. We know the power of teamwork. By working together we are able to achieve our goals. The staff at SMRC will continue to thrive and grow personally and professionally. We welcome each new challenge with strength and grace.

July hurricane outlook
Atlantic tropical cyclone activity typically picks up a bit during the first half of July. Since the current active hurricane period began in 1995, seven of 14 years (50%) have had a named storm form during the first half of July. The busiest first half of July occurred in 2005, when three hurricanes formed. These included Hurricane Dennis and Hurricane Emily--the strongest hurricanes ever observed...

Hurricane track forecasts have improved by about 50% over the past twenty years, which has undoubtedly saved many lives and billions of dollars. These forecast improvements have primarily resulted from the investment made in hurricane research, which has been funded at approximately $50 million per year over that period. To me, it is unfathomable that our nation spends so little on scientific research...

The tropics are quiet right now, as the "invest 93" disturbance over the Yucatan Peninsula has dissipated, and no computer models are showing any Atlantic tropical storm formation over the next seven days. Thus, it's a good time to continue with my series on the six typhoon/hurricane hunter missions that never returned. The third typhoon hunter mission lost occurred on December 16, 1953, during a penetration...

Hi, this is Rob Carver, again filling in for Jeff Masters. Invest93L is still present as of the 8am EDT Tropical Weather Outlook, but I'm extremely doubtful that it will reach even tropical depression status. Invest93L's presentation on satellite imagery does not project the image of a strengthening storm. Convection, what there is of it, appears to be anchored over the Yucatan Straits and is...

The 6 lost Hurricane Hunter missions, Part II: Typhoon Wilma, 1952
Dr. Masters is on vacation this week, so we're posting some blogs he wrote before hitting the road. The second Hurricane Hunter mission that didn't make it back was the only flight lost in a Category 5 storm. On October 26, 1952, an Air Force WB-29 aircraft knick-named "Typhoon Goon II" (44-69770), making a low-level penetration of Typhoon Wilma, went down 300 miles east of Leyte in the Philippines....
